I use WRC for the internal stems, keep the weight out of it as much as possible. I start out with 1" nominal wood (3/4") and taper the ends to fit. There isn't a huge requirement for excess strength in these pieces, it's mostly for added support and making the strips end easily since they can be stapled to the internal stems until the glue sets up.

The outer layer of glass is where the strength is and I prefer and external laminated stem for extra strength.
