Quick question: Are most here using MDF, or plywood, for their stations? I've always used Ply - but I've noticed quite a few (including Uncle Nick) use MDF. Though I prefer staple-less, my son in law is going to be 'learning', and might have a few staples this time around! Also - 1/2" or thicker?

I generally use plywood, usually 1/2" ACX. One side is sanded so I can directly glue my prints directly to the plywood. Even better is MDO. It's even smoother and stays stable. It holds staples very well (occasionally too well). Hot glue sticks very well too it. Plywood is also better if you're planning on making more than one kayak. It's very resilient.

I've done two boats using MDF. The forms were CNC cut and given to me by customers. I personally don't like it for forms. It's notorious for splitting with staples. No issues with hot glue. If you're building one kayak it's probably fine.

Some people use particle board. It holds staples between the two. Cheap but heavy and brittle.
