I understand the point of view of furniture makers who use a plane to finish a surface. I too have finished furniture with a plane. I also worked for a window and door shop where we reproduced 17th and 18th century windows and doors, many with hand planed surfaces. So I understand what can be done with a plane in the hands of a skilled craftsman.

Planes came into stripper construction, as tool to correct misaligned strips. Surfacing a whole hull was a reaction to the poor alternative of the disk sander. We need not be a slave to this history. Times have changed and there are better more productive methods available.

If all energy is focused to keep strips on forms and align edges the hull is fair from the start. I have never heard this stated. The assumption has always been, you'll have trouble placing strips and have to deal with it.

Today with a heat gun, even 1/4" strips can be placed without force. To start with a fair surface and plane it, only to go over it by sanding, then with a fairing board is counterproductive.

My training is as a sculptor. I have labored with formless materials like clay and plaster to create complex surfaces. It is perhaps this experience most of all which gives me such an appreciation for the how simply and beautifully wood strips naturally create a fair hull shape. To destroy this fair surface by working it over and over, to reach the starting point of a fair surface once again makes no sense.

If we build strippers we are going to do a lot of sanding. If we understand the genius of strip building, that the strips naturally create a fair surface, then the less we do to that surface the more it will remain fair.

If we can learn the skill to make a blade really sharp. And we can learn to tune a plane to make micro cuts with precision strokes, we can learn to hold a random orbital sander to follow the curves of a hull and in one step smooth and maintain a fair surface.

Think about it. Question everything.

All the best,
Rob
