Dan, I think you might want to note in your photos and explanation that a lot of the builds you are currently doing are from Bjorn. Correct me if I am wrong since it has been a few years since I built the Black Pearl, but his plans give a base line to work from for all the forms and they are set at a distance from that baseline, which in turn is your strong back? Therefore you can leave that deck portion on and use the extension as your "riser".

I am sure you can explain it further and better than me, but this is different than a strong back through molds (internal) or those that have separate risers holding forms centered on a given centerline on patterns from plans.

Good point, Rod. Björn does draw a reference datum on his plans. This becomes the baseline for the hull forms on the strong-back. I'm so used to it that I've been drawing one on my plans as well. Why have a customer pick something arbitrary.

Any plans that are printed or hand drawn can use the basic method, even ones designed for internal strong-backs. When you copy/glue your plans to your plywood/MDF just pick a distance from the baseline to a line common to all the forms (eg the design waterline) and draw on your own baseline. Same idea.

An extra bonus: The risers, once cut off from the molds, can also be used as cradles while you're working on the interior of the deck. Picture from the 2011 "Vinaccia" Black Pearl project.
