Nice job on the kayak Shawn.
Re hand planes ...can't speak highly enough of the Lie Nielsen 102 - bronze 'apron' plane. (Nick has them in the shop). I used this one 95% of the time on my recent kayak build. Really nice fit in the hand and great for bevelling plank edges.

Another possibility is the Veritas (LeeValley) apron plane which is comparable, but with a bit better adjustment mechanism.

Both of those choices have excellent blades and quality construction, unlike the modern Stanley Record planes. Older planes can be OK but the 'collectible' designation has ruined the prices, IMO.

The Primus ECE block plane is excellent, if you can find one at a decent price, IMO.
