That's a good example. I've got a big ding in the bow of my NDK boat, dropped it off a roof rack onto a concrete parking bumper, the gelcoat has to be 1/8" thick. Strip the gelcoat and paint it and you'd easily lose 10 lbs. if not more.

Btw, that ding in the bow just damaged the gelcoat, a 6 foot drop onto a hard edge concrete did no damage to the glass under the gelcoat at all. The construction isn't pretty but it is strong.
