as an experienced maker of 18th century period furniture and user of planes I can tell you that with a well tuned plane you are removing shavings of 0.001-0.003 inch thickness. With a slight camber on the plane iron you cut a microscopic scallop (invisible to the eye) which prevents the corners of the iron from digging in. (i.e. deeper at center of cut narrowing to zero at the edges). It is possible to plane a table top and use that glass smooth surface as the final surface, without any sanding. The sole of the plane is its own reference surface and the longer the plane sole, the less likely it is to follow hills and valleys but to skim across the hilltops.

I agree, for the application you describe, a well tuned plane is the perfect tool. I'm sure I don't have the skill to handle a plane and make as fine a shaving as you, but then I'm not making 18th century furniture.

On our boat hulls, everything is hilltops, except some designs which have significant valleys.

For years on this board, I have labored to put into words my ideas of why I believe "using a plane to fair a hull" is an oxymoron. I am grateful that I have been forced to think hard, over and over again, to see why the ROS excels at creating a short path, with the least amount of work, to a fair surface.

In short, I am forced to write and think about putting my ideas into writing, my weakest skill. This struggle on my part, has made me think about how I hold and use a ROS and how the use of grits are largely misunderstood, or ignored. The result for me, has been a better and better surface with less work.

If you saw someone, who needed a certain length of board, take a larger board and chop it into little pieces, then glue the pieces together to make the board the length they needed, instead of just taking the long board to the chop saw and cutting it to length, wouldn't you want to scream, wait a minute!!! This is how I feel when I hear people talking about using a plane on their fair hull.

The Random Orbital Sander is the perfect tool. Unlike the plane which is limited to a linear path, the ROS can move in all directions. The disk size is just right to follow "almost flats" and rounded surfaces and maintain a fair surface if it is held lightly.

Imagine the hull surface and think of gently stroking a baby's skin, let the sanding disk surface guide the rotation of the wrist to mirror the hull surface. Utilize grit and speed, instead of pressure and power, to reinforce the fair surface naturally created by the strips.

It's important to use a firm backing pad on the ROS to keep the surface fair. A soft backing pad will reflect any inconsistency is the surface density like the difference between early wood and late wood in growth rings and result in a wavy surface. A course grit like 60 will remove material quickly avoiding the need to concentrate force and pressure to "erase" a low spot.

Relax, Jay, keep doing what you're doing. I know some of you just like to make hamster shavings.

It's your choice, but a choice it is.
