Hi,
Sorry in advance for the long post. I suppose I have three questions that I was hoping to get help with.
1. Using the help of this forum I built a 13' Sea Bee (multi-chine) a few years ago. I used pine for the stringers (from pieces scabbed together with screws and epoxy), exterior plywood for the bulkheads, and 8oz polyester with an oil based exterior deck paint for the skin.
The boat has served me very well in my local rivers and lakes over the years (although I never have been really happy with my seat).
The boat is getting some age on it now, and while it does not leak, it does have cracks in the finish all along the hard lines of the boat (along the keel, and along the sewed seam). I don't know if the proper fix is to just apply more coats of the same finish over top the original finish. Or if the whole thing needs re-skinned. It may even be fine to continue using as is. What would be the best way to proceed with this boat?
2. I am going to Myrtle Beach, SC this year, and I would really like to kayak while I am there. Mostly in the Cherry Grove inlet area, but possible try the surf too. Kayak rentals are expensive, and I doubt I will like the boats, and I already have my Sea Bee. It is a 9 hour drive to the beach for me, and I am a little apprehensive about driving my boat that far on the highway. I have a factory roof rack on my Subaru, and J hooks to hold the boat. Would this be safe enough to haul for that kind of distance? Is there a certain speed I should stay below?
3. I am also wondering if my old Sea Bee can hold up to the ocean in its current state. And is it a good design for the rougher water it will encounter there? I had considered possibly making a new boat (probably another Yost design). Does anyone have any thoughts on the sea-worthiness of the Sea Bee, and whether I would get any major benefit from building a different boat?
Thanks
