Another Race, This Time in the Baidarka

Curses, another second place. Of course, it could have been worse.

The race was the Orange to Athol Rat Race. (That’s A-T-H-O-L, not …. well…. I know what you were thinking.)

I was shredded again by the venerable Ted Van Dusen, who finished 27 minutes ahead of me. I did improve: he beat me by about 27 minutes corrected time in a 11.3 mile race, which is an improvement from the 23:30 he beat me by last race which was 7.8 miles. But not much.

This race was a little more fun, in that I caught up to and passed, a young buck paddling a single racing canoe in the up-river portion of the race. He had started about 5 minutes ahead of me and I began to feel my oats! I had a mapping GPS, and as such, I could anticipate the turns in the river and read the currents better than he. But alas, my fun ended as we reached the turnaround point and headed back down-river. Reading the current is not as important in the down river portion of a race and he passed me after about half a mile. Regrettably, I must report, that youth, strength, and endurance, got the better of guile, the resources to purchase better technology, and a willingness to engage in treachery. He surged ahead by several minutes over the next 5 miles. Life sucks.
