Why is the cable hole at the bottom? It should be at the top.

I built my skeg box per Mike's technique (I think) and your skeg box looks different. I built, tested and fiberglassed the entire skeg box on the bench and then installed the pressembled unit in the kayak. Because I don't see a top to your skeg box I'm guessing you built in place?

Tips: Make sure your axle holes are in place prior to installing the box. Drill 1/2" hioles for the axle, fill with epoxy and redrill at the axle diameter.
I drilled my holes slightly smaller than the axle bolt. This let me chuck the bolt in a drill and "self tap into the epoxy" I kept the drill going until I stripped out the threaeds formed by the bolt. This left a nice tight fit. If you just use a 1/4" drill for a 1/4" axle you'll have slop and the skeg will rattle. I also used thin foam washers to keep the skeg centered and add some friction so it holds position (also reduces rattles).

The carbon fiber rod and teflon sheath work really well.
