I have experienced wide variations in cedar. Mostly I buy planks for repairing my fences, more than I need, and keep the best ones for boats! The only snag is the thickness, 5/8 instead of the 3/4 that I would prefer, but that only means a few more strips are required. Good to know Home Depot have nice stuff - I will give it a try.
