Hi John,
Even though a glass covered wood/canvas canoe is much easier to maintain I'd have to have it done in traditional canvas, these old canoes have a certain something about them. They just feel and smell different, it's a good thing.
Right at the end of high school, late 60's my father and I and his best friend and his son made a two week canoe trip up in Canada using wood/canvas canoes, great memories. Spent many summers using them up there too. Remember portaging alone with a 16 footer into a back woods lake for a weekend's fishing trip. Not sure I'd want to try that now, certainly not with a canoe that heavy.
