I just clamp the frames of a Yost boat to the U shaped pieces, the clamps only need to be in place until the stringers are attached and clamps are easy to re-position if need be and also easier to remove. In a class a couple years back I had used drywall screws and one was really interesting to remove after the stringers were attached. (hadn't noticed that the stringers completely blocked access that screw - embarrassing when you've got a room full of students)
