I live in the PNW, and should have access to some good lumber, gonna have to go to a lumber yard.

Yellow cedar aka 'Alaska cypress' (it's not really a cedar) is nice stuff to work with IMO and you should be able to find it.... (some folks hate the smell, BTW)...unfortunately it's considered 'junk wood' in BC ...mostly good for pilings and docks.
Yesterday I met a neighbor who's building a SOF - his local mill guy burns yellow cedar in the furnace...'You want to use that? Well, I'd better saw up a log instead of bucking it into firewood' ....
