When using a solid wire, you need to go with a smaller diameter, but you can do that without any problems since a single wire works in compression better than a multi-strand cable.

That said, any skeg cable or wire can kink.

What's really needed IMO is a looped cable system that works only in tension, which would allow for much smaller diameter cables in the 1mm range. Both sides of the loop could be run in the same plastic tube housing that's typically used for a single 1/8" cable. This type of system could also work with small diameter Spectra cord, which has built-in lubricity.

As for rope skegs, I have yet to see one that's anything close to foolproof. The bungees get weak over time and the rope gets stiff from salt, minerals and sun exposure. Adjustments are imprecise at best. In my experience, even the flawed cable systems in most boats are much more reliable than rope skegs.
