Most 1x19 wire for sailboats is quite stiff, very difficult to tightly bend let alone kink. A solid wire that size won't bend easily, likely not enough to be routed to the control box, let alone be flexible enough to control a skeg.

Just to be clear- you're saying that 1x19 is OK, but solid wire wouldn't work well?

It (1x19) works very well in the skeg/skeel I built for my Frej project.
1x19 is supplied with the KajakSport skegs
1x19 is used in the Reg Lake skegs/skeels for Sterling Kayaks
1x19 is in the skeg in my wife's NDK Romany kayak

IMO, solid wire in 1/16" wouldn't be a good choice- not stiff enough to 'push' well.
If a builder wants to go in that direction, uing a CF rod (which can easily be epoxy bonded) would be a better choice . There have been examples of nice skegs using CF push rods here in the forum.

Rope skegs can work but the skeg needs to be designed well to make small adjustments possible, and line does chafe and fail, so the skeg also needs to be easily field-serviceable. And, good non-stretch line for that application is difficult to find.
