That is exactly how mine works, and it works great. If I hit something, it kicks up, and then re-deploys to the same position without my help. The bungee on my design is stored relaxed and only stretched into operating mode when the kayak is being used. This seems to keep the bungee happy for a long time, ~3 years so far on Kayak #1.
