Strip: Hello, and a question

Hi, I'm Paul, and I am planning on building my first kayak as a gift to my wife. I'm not sure what will be harder -- building it, or keeping her out of my workshop long enough to make it a surprise.

I'm sure there will be a few additional tools needed, but I suspect I've got the big ones covered as I've a reasonably equipped workshop: table saw, router table, bandsaw, jointer, planer, scrollsaw, stand-alone and hand sanders, and a turbine-based HVLP spray system. Rounding it up a modest collection of cabinet scrapers, chisels, and hand planes with appropriate sharpening supplies. On the opposite end of the spectrum, a 24" x 36" CNC router.

My order for "The Strip Built Sea Kayak" and "Kayak Craft" should arrive in my mailbox sometime this week.

My question is whether or not it would be advisable for me, as a first time builder, to hold off and take a three day class offered by a local builder: http://www.mackinawwatercraft.com/classes.php

I do not have trouble learning from books, and of course there are great resources such as this forum. To better frame the question -- in hindsight, if you had access to a class like this prior to your first build, would you have taken it? (Cost is about $200)
