A few answers:
Regarding what kind of woodworker: After a year of high school wood shop I worked a year in a production shop (trade show displays) before moving on to other interests. Recently retired, I have rekindled my interest in woodworking. I've made a few small pieces of furniture, restored and rejuvenated some old, and using my CNC have created some interesting gifts. I also love to restore old tools. Half my shop is made up of hand and power tools brought back from the dead. I am more interested in making something outstanding, than making lots of average things. Not that I succeed, but that is what I strive to do. Sometimes I feel that my primary output is precision cut firewood and artisan quality sawdust, but I keep trying.
Kayak experience and ability -- Not much. Same for my wife. Based on the advise I'm reading, I think I need to take advantage of a few classes offered not far from here and be more sure of building the correct boat.
As far as keeping the build a secret -- I agree, that's an impossible goal. But given my wife's average interest in what's going on in my woodshop and her ability to figure out what something is gonna be, the secret might last a bit longer than you would expect.
Rob, I appreciate your advice. In fact, your web page was one of the many I referred to before deciding to walk down this path. I understand how more sources can confuse, on the other hand in the places they agree you become more confident. I take all expert advise with a grain of salt. In my electronics repair days we joked that an "expert" was anyone from more than 50 miles away.
Based on the feedback and my evolving gut feeling, my current plan is:
Take kayak lessons.
Read (STUDY) the two books I have ordered, and possibly more.
Take the building course when next offered.
Buy beer and entice a friend who made a cedar strip canoe to help me where needed.
Read this forum, old and new.
