With your background I would think that the lessons were not necessary. They would give confidence, sure, but if you begin the project sensibly, and follow the plans, one step leads to another and everything becomes apparent as you go along. You will find the process works out more elegantly than you imagine prior to starting.

It's unlikely you will need many of your machines. When I get tempted to buy machinery I always consider how much precious kayak building space it is going to use up and, mostly, I end up not getting it.

For strip, apart from the table saw and the random orbital sander, it is all hand tools really, unless you are going to bead and cove your strips, but hey, I don't want to start an argument here, so we won't mention B&C. :-) For ply you don't even need the table saw or even the ROS.

The lack of use of machine tools is one of the things I love about kayak building.

I know there are some real pros here, who actually sell boats, but you may like to check out my website for start to finish photo logs of a few boats. To complicate the issue a little more, I do some things differently to most, a bit back to front in some areas, but mostly there is good reason for it.... I think.... No, of course, there must be....
