OK, I am sure I am not the only one who starts out on an ocean of indecision without a rudder. Or a skeg.
Latest thoughts:
Mrs and I have limited kayak experience. We have paddled around several small inland lakes in several different kayak, ranging from a 10 foot recreational rental, to an 18 foot sea kayak.
We did not care for the 10' boat. The kayak we used the most was a Venture which the owner said is 15' 6" long and 21.5' wide. I'm suspicious that he is off a bit and that it was the Venture Easky15 (15', 24") We had no problem with this kayak and enjoyed it quite a bit.
We don't really have the knowledge or experience to know what we really like. It seems that as a beginner one has two choices, buy a kayak you will grow out of, or buy a kayak you will grow into.
Given the vast ocean of not knowing, I am thinking of taking a different tack. As much as I yearn to build a strip-built beauty, I'd hate to build one that ended up being the wrong choice. So how to bridge the gap.
I could buy a set of used kayaks -- which seems to be roughly $400+ each based on what's available around here.
..or..
I could build a set of stitch and glue kayaks, which would give me epoxy and glass practice come the day I decided what would be our dream boats. Based on what I've read, it seems these can be built for about $500 each. So the first question would be is this a reasonable estimate?
My wife's usage would be most likely calm lakes and rivers with the occasional ski boat wake. I'd be tempted to take on the shores of the Great Lakes in calmer weather.
So what would be good S&G boats? I've looked at the Petrel Play, the Shearwater Sport and 16, and the Chesapeake 16. I am open to suggestions.
Again, my long-range goal is a strip build, but I'm beginning to believe that this is a project best put on hold for the time being.
