The big question at hand is if it will be in a similar ballpark to buy used vs build. Buying used is probably the least expensive way to go, but then I'm limited to what happens to be available on the used market. I have more options in the build-it market.
IMO, buying a used boat will be cheaper than building one, for similar features and quality, when you are building a first boat. It's tough for me to estimate the exact amount of materials. For example, can you cut the S&G panels from plywood sheets with little waste, or will you need extra sheets? Need an extra gallon of epoxy? Another container of epoxy additive? It all adds up.
It's different if you have already built a few projects and have 'leftovers' around the shop.
Another question I should ask, along with the average cost of a build-from-plan S&G kayak, is what is the resale market on a stitch and glue. In reality if I were to move on to something else I'd probably give them to my kids, but worth considering none-the-less.
It's not popular to say it around here, but IME the resale value is low on homebuilt wood boats - you might recover your cost of materials. A name brand kit kayak with a modern look like the Petrel or the Pygmy kits, with bulkheads, and a 'factory' seat and backband might be an easier sell, but getting your money back would still be a challenge.
When it comes time to re-sell, you'll be up against those 'indestructible' plastic boats from the box store (Dicks (?) with rubber hatch covers and factory seats, and a warranty and return policy vs your homebuilt of unknown (to the buyer) quality, requiring varnishing or painting....
My advice: Build it for the fun & satisfaction, but don't tell the family CFO that it will be a money-making venture!
