If you leave the magnets un-coated they certainly rust easily, but not all the time.
Mine that are potted in epoxy on the boat look fine after 2 years, and the extras that I use for hanging tools around the shop are all in good shape, except for a couple.

So there is always a reasonable chance you are right.
I just like the smooth look.
