Et- I'm sure you know this, but for others reading the thread:
Most skeg boats need the skeg not for 'tracking' (going in a straight line when that's what you want) but to overcome weathercocking (turning into the the wind) tendencies. Without a skeg, some boats are ' a real handful' in strong winds.

When building another boat to a previous design any weathercocking is best adjusted by modifying the sheerline rather than adding a skeg.

Often even without wind a boat will slew randomly to one side or other when paddled at some speed. This is a design fault of many factory boats which are supplied with a rudder, and usually stops when the rudder is deployed. Thgis is due to unbalanced lateral areas above and below the waterline and can vary with paddler.
