Also if either of you are compact(weight not the issue here)--make sure the kayak is not too large to really fit the paddler.
I am 5'2" (I hope I haven't lost too much height) and many of the kayaks I have tried out swallow me. The designs for women seem to be the best fit. ....... Size really is the difference between OK and great. My wife took a lesson in a borrowed boat that was too large for her and it was not a great experience.

Good advice, IMO.
My wife described most of the boats she rented as feeling like 'paddling the bathtub'....
Some of Bjorn Thomasson's designs with the low back deck would be good bets for a shorter paddler (well, any paddler actually).....just avoid those small 'ocean' cockpits... ;-)
For skill development and fun day paddling, I avoid any touring/tripping/expedition style boats. Though some ( e.g. Mariner Max) can do double duty, it's rare. Adding water ballast to a bigger boat can make it better for day paddling.
