Did you somehow clamp the ripped planks back to the 4x4 to provide support for the saw base? Or did you just run the saw base on the narrowing remaining post

I just cut two boards off the 4 x 4 so the rest of the post is easily manageable with the table saw. There's enough flat surface to do a couple of 3/4" boards. I did all the strip cutting on the table saw. Now the remaining post stock can be done in one pass on a 10" saw. If you have a lot of twist or warp, you may have to use a few finish nails and tack on a straight edge guide and straighten out an edge of the stock. Sometimes I just use a hand plane and do it that way if it's not too bad.
