As far as knots are concerned take a look at the end grain of the posts. Posts are often made from the heartwood, left over from sawing out slash-cut planks. Knots visible at the outer surface will tend to get smaller as they reach the center of the log and less of a problem. If the bolt holes are on one plane just toss the plank that ends up with most or all of them but if a plank has one hole just treat it as you would a knot. I tend to toss stuff that results on scarfs closer than 4 feet myself.

Most of us have had to toss wood that looked promising at first: they're called hard bargains. File it under "life" and put the rejects on the firewood stack.
