What length boards should I purchase? I assume 18' boards are out of question.
Would a mix of 8' and 10' boards be OK?

It's a bit of a tricky question, as you have probably figured out.
For an 18' boat, the strips along the sheer will probably be in the 19-20 (?) range depending on the beam.
And, you probably won't want the scarfs or butt joins to align too close together in adjacent strips.
What method are you planning to use for joining strips: butt, scarf strips, or scarf planks before ripping strips?
Another issue is where the 'premium' for longer boards kicks in with your lumber supplier.
It might be cheaper to buy 16 footers with a few knots and just get the shorter boards that way.
YMMV, etc..
What tools for milling do you have? Thickness planer?
