I only count on ~40% of a board being usable.
Knots, saw kerf, and boards not exactly fitting the width you want. And length needs varying, so there are lots of short leftovers.
Buy as thick and as good quality (fewer knots) as you can find and the % goes up
So CLCboats might be doing you a favor by suggesting you get extras, rather than quoting exactly what it takes.

Personally I typically find 8' boards, so I have to join a lot.
I join with a butt joint on the boat.

I also don't use Bead and Cove, thinking it wastes a lot of wood, and the cove is very delicate.
You can find lots of discussion on that question.

Have fun, but make a decision and get going. Nothing you do for the first time will satisfy you after several boats!
