The main reason I use the belt sander method of scarfing as opposed to the drop saw method is that I don't own a drop saw, but I was given an old belt sander years ago and it still works.

I don't claim that my method is better than anyone else's. My point is just that my methods can be done quite well with the tools and the skills I have. If i owned different tools and had different skills I might do things differently.
