Here's my take on this...
I recently redid the skeg in my Petrel. I've been using CF rod for the cable and had been glueing it but found this to be less than serviceable so I drilled a hole in the control knob and added a set screw. The fin is now made from scrap fiberglass (not the prettiest, but it works) and the cable has a piece of SS tubing glued to the end as a ferrule. It attaches similarly to a throttle/carburetor linkage in a car. This may be the weak link as the fin is thin, but so far so good. I am using SS tubing flared at one end and pressed into the control box and the skeg box. This receives the nylon tubing.
