What grit paper are you using on the disc sander and what adhesive on the scarf joint?

Looks like 80 grit. Mostly I use Titebond III for softwoods with a 6:1 scarf. It is water-based and sets quickly. I am careful to remove the dust especially with open-grained woods.

I have used 4:1 on an experimental basis and that works too but it's near the limit of what will work and the end grain is beginning to soak up the glue.

I prefer epoxy for hardwoods but it's an excellent lubricant and the pieces tend to slide apart when clamped, 8:1 or 10:1 works better.

Checkout other threads on scarfing too: some guys on the forum just butt the strips but that may be when used on bead and cove strips.
