I sprayed my kayak with Awlcraft 2000. The manufacturer recommends waxing with their wax (because automotive wax can cause it to yellow) to extend the life of the coating. Spending 15 minutes once a month putting on wax to extend the life of the coating is worth it to me. Recoating takes a lot of time and money that I could spend paddling and buying gear.

In my woodworking career I haven't used varnish, so I don't know how to care for it. I would guess that since it's a pretty old type of finish it probably doesn't need extra protection. I would check with the manufacturer to find out what they say.

How you care for your kayak is up to you. You clearly seem to feel that routine maintenance is not necessary. That's fine. There are plenty of people who don't maintain their kayaks, so you're in good company. I'll continue to follow the manufacturer's guidelines, though. They designed and tested the product, and they know what's best. I want the performance characteristics their product offers, and that means following their instructions. I'm fine with that.
