Putty knife - it won't alter the chemical composition at all.
I found a small resin puddle in front of the can (vent hole had plugged, and temp. change had caused some oozing from the pump).
Throwing a few handfuls of sawdust down, and scraping up later with a putty knife took care of most of it. The rest wiped up with a solvent-wet paper towel.
