Every design I have played with a reasonably efficient 16 footer is more efficient than a fast 17.5 to 18.5 footer up to 3.5 knots or about 4 mph, about the same at 4 knots and the fast kayak is noticeably more efficient at 4.5 knots or just over 5 mph and significantly more efficient at 5 knots. Reality for me is that the only time I consistently paddle at or above 4.5 knots is when I am going out for exercise verses recreation. I do not consider myself to be athletic but I am a reasonably strong paddler and 5 knots is extremely hard to maintain for more than a few miles and 4.5 knots is a hard push on a 7-10 mile paddle when I am paddling 2 or 3 times a week.
