I just finished coating my first SOF using Spirit Line's urethane. Not keen on the white nylon look and reasonably certain I could get good results by tinting the urethane with the rare earth pigment they sell, I gave it a shot.
The results are godawful.
I'm no perfectionist, but it looks so terrible I'm going to be embarrassed to strap the flippin' thing to the car. The pigment didn't fully tint the kayak and dramatically highlights the drip, sags, and "trowel marks" from my inexpert application. I'd have been better ff with no color at all. The product description said to expect a mottled look akin to natural skin- this looks like my seal had the mange. To add insult to injury I ran out of urethane and couldn't do a third coat on the deck (which may have helped even things out a tiny bit).
Live and learn.
While I'd love to hide my lousy work in some flat black paint and move on with it, I'm not sure how that would work given the urethane undercoat. Pealing/flaking black paint would be the coup de grace in my botched finish.
Any advice on salvaging the look of an otherwise nice looking boat?
Thanks all,
Patrick
