Interesting to hear other try new coatings. Glad to hear there is something that keeps the recycled from fuzzing up too. It's been an OK fabric but it is not lived up to my standards. I will not be ordering anymore of the recycled 8 oz. I have one roll left and marked it way down, when it is gone that is it. The 11.7 oz is another story! I love that stuff.
I hear you about Rustoleum. It is the best paint I have used by far. With oil based paint going away I have been trying latex paints. Stick with gloss! Flat and semi-gloss are not as tough and are porous to some extent. I painted one semi-gloss black and over time it started to seep water in really bad. You can't find a leak but after an hour to two there was enough that you had to pump it out. Lay on wet grass and you could see the fabric inside the boat change color where the water was seeping it. I just finished up putting a second coat of gloss black Rustoleum on it.
In my classes we use Valspar Ultra gloss (latex) largely because it dries so fast. I have used it on the 11.7 on my Sling Shot and it is now a little over a year old and I am impressed with the way it has held up. I just apply it straight to the fabric, no other sealers. While I am not against experimenting, I have never seen the need. Paint works just fine and saves me a step and some weight.
If you looking for a clear coat, look at Dura-tuff from Famowood. It is water clear poly and pretty tough finish. I keep saying I am going to use it again but I like color... other than white that is.
