I guess, if a buoyancy bag is to be truly a backup in an impact and holing situation, or, as we have seen recently, a shark bite, then it would have to be carried deflated, and inflated post impact, otherwise the bag itself could be punctured at the same time.

Mind you, in a shark bite situation I wouldn't be hanging around to inflate the damned thing. I would be instantly turning the boat into a planing hydrofoil.

For hatches popping off, another option might be to duct tape them on if one is going looking for trouble.

Of course, if one is touring, then there will be many dry bags inside.

I can't say that I ever get into such radical situations myself. I am a gentleman paddler. Get in dry, get out dry, and avoid shark infested waters.
