I built an SOF 15' Osprey by John Winters (see photo of plywood S&G and strip version) using selected frames (see photo) from the strip plans in 5/8" plywood . The stringers were placed at what seemed appropriate positions on the ply frames and bent around them. I marked the positions and cut notches for the stringers. This canoe is available commercially and is highly regarded. It has tumblehome and this seems to stiffen the hull. Even so, the boat straightened out a bit when removed from its supports and the middle of the keel was a bit concave due to the stiffness of the wood. The bends I put in the gunwales and keel for rocker and sheer did not stay. I added a thin tapering strip of wood to get the keel right and accepted the sight loss of sheer curve. This problem is probably caused by the absence of deck stringers and cockpit coaming to keep the shape. Now I laminate these from two strips to be sure that the bend is permanent. Dave Gentry does something similar. I used aluminum extrusions as rails to slide the seat on and made a backband. As you can see I use a double paddle.

You can select any plans you like that have stations drawn or tables of offsets and do what I did. Bryan Hansell has done a fantastic job in providing free plans of traditional canoes and kayaks.
