Exactly... good quality plywood has an absurd amount of strength in-plane. This is probably why you see traditional kayaks with 6" spacing on ribs and plywood fuselages with 2+ft spacing on frames using less total material.

I thought that a lot of the strength to resist skin compression in a SOF kayak came from the hefty deck beams, not the ribs, but I may well have that wrong.

And, the links posted do show that a skin-style canoe can be done with 'modern' materials. My inclination if I were to make that style would be to go 'whole hog' and build a Monfort-style boat. Visible plywood fuselage frames aren't very appealing to me.
