Good thought, Bill. The guys in the canoe did have a bit of a tough time with the lack of anything but thwarts to attach to. I can imagine that if they flipped, all the gear would "hang" out the top of the boat and make it a bugger to flip it back upright.

Agreed- and without the tethers, a dump means a real 'yard sale' of gear in the water. ;-)

In a rented canoe, it's usually possible to arrange a sort of 'freight net' between the thwarts to control the gear, but you need to provide that yourself.

In a canoe that's owned, rather than rented, adding enough rigging points along the gunwales and possibly D-rings on the bottom is time well spent, IMO. And, in a 'traditional' (or traditional-style strip) canoe, there's usually a ventilated inwale arrangement which provides lots of lashing opportunities.

If you are day-paddling in rougher water, you'll need lashing for the air bag(s) anyway.
