Hi John.
If I am covering the entire hatch, or a decent portion of it, I would also glue the gasket to the hatch. But these are fairly narrow, so my reasoning is that they are less likely to be rubbed off or squeezed out of their proper location if they are safely nestled in the hatch lip recess. Only reason really.
