Yeah, the article is somewhat flawed, or at least unclear, but I think if you applied the concept maybe you could do your lighter cloth layers at 45* to the grain and then the football overlaid at 90*. I'm not sure about what Bill says regarding the strength of the individual strands of glass as to whether two layers of 3.2 are as strong as one layer of 6, but assuming it is if you use the tight weave 3.2 it will take less epoxy to fill the weave and therefore reduce the weight.

It's nice that they've redone the Epoxyworks page, so you can search for individual articles by topic.
