I've been struggling with the same thing Dan.
I asked Dan Caouette at Clearstream about it. As you know his work is all first class, and that's how he does it.
He did mention that the thickened epoxy he uses to attach the hatch lips to the deck provides a small amount of space between hatch lips and deck.
Hopefully other builders that don't use spacers will chime in here.
