Yes I do and it's well worn...part of the privilege of being a dad of 2 tornados that conspire to ensure you never get more than 2 hours of sleep at any point throughout any day or night.
My most recent visit to the chair, courtesy of my funny math, where somewhere in my head 24 + 3 equaled 24 inches.
I mentioned earlier how Rob cautions against coming up with one solution only to generate 3 other problems...well it went something like this:
Problem: I need a space to work...
Solution: Ok i'll clear this nice 20 ft stretch...
Problem: Well where do I put all that stuff sitting on the floor?
Solution: Build a shelf
Problem: But where do I put it?
Solution: Knock down that wall on the other side of the basement
Problem: I've never demo'd a wall
Solution: Buy a sledgehammer
Ok walls gone
Problem: How the hell do I stack all this crap
Solution: Build a shelf
Problem: don't want to spend $100 on a pansy wire shelve
Solution: Buy a stack of 2x4's and make your own damn shelf
which led to the grand arithmetic problem where 24 + 1.5 + 1.5 did not equal 24 inches
I cut the short beams exactly to 24" but did not account for the 1.5" inches of the cross beams that would lay proud to the vertical supports. What that left me with was 93" of width and 27" of depth (a single 4x8 would have given me 2 2x8 panels). So my plan to use 2 OSB boards suddenly turned in 4 and 2 more trips to Home Depot to fix a simple math error.
It was the clearest example of a solution that led to more problems, and in my defense, I was literally exhausted when I was laying out the designs in sketchup and missed what should have been a trivial measurement to verify.
The end result of that cascade of failures is that that 27" depth is now a feature of my fancy new shelves. About the only thing I did do right was remember to square up the entire mass of shelves so I have that going for me :)
Oh and I know what you're thinking - if I screwed that up - imagine how badly I'll screw this boat up...and believe me - it terrifies me to think of all the places this could go wrong...
Which is why I'm here :)
