On your question regarding wood, I made my boat out of a mix of NWC and WRC. I ordered 6X 1"X6"X8 foot long boards. The total with shipping was ~$160. For the WRC I used a local kiln dried 1X10"X18-20 foot board. I don't remember how much it cost, it was pricey. I had good luck with the first board, all the grain was tight and it machined well. The second board I got from them was a waste of $ since it looked like it wasn't sawn correctly. When I stripped the board out, the edges were really soft. I couldn't even hand plane them without creating huge splinters. I almost took all the boards back to the lumber shop but it was already milled and planed.

The NWC from Portage mills was rough sawn allowing me enough material to plane and create beautiful strips. I don't know what that converts to from a board foot perspective. I did splice one of my left over WRC short strips into long strips because of the issues I had with the last board. The splices are hard to pick out. I left them towards the stern so I wouldn't have to think about it while paddling along.
