Appreciate the insights guys...On the surface the apron planes seems the way to go...I just have to hold off for a bit since my initial wood purchase blew this budget cycle out of the water.

I also have the harborfreight palm plane and after spending an hour regrinding the bevels, it cuts the way it should, but it's absolutely terrible at holding the blade position.

I'll eventually extend the plane collection, but really what I was after was everyone's "go-to" plane for strip work.
