Personally I wouldn't want to rely on the tiny wood joint between the riser and the hull to take any load. let alone the abuse of a skirt and resting your weight on it as you enter and exit the boat. Mine are glassed, it's where the strength is.

The hole in the kayak formed by the cockpit is a weak spot in the overall structure. Part of the reinforcement of that hole is the coaming and rim.
The boat in the photo below had a large wave dump on it. The boat failed at the cockpit. You can see the coaming was glued to the deck and that glue bond failed. It is possible that with a better bond between the coaming rim and could have prevented this particular failure. A couple layers of glass between the deck and coaming would have contributed considerable structural strength.
That said, in the ocean there is always a bigger wave and given a big enough wave, the kayak will break. Or the person paddling it will break.
