Pah! He should have used wood.

I suspect strip or S&G would hold up pretty well in the circumstances he experienced. I speculate that the impact of the wave compressed the front deck down. It looks like this caused the coaming ring to crack and separate from the deck. This would have allowed the whole bow to fold up, breaking it off.

Due to its skin thickness, a wood cored boat is stiffer and less likely to get compressed, which makes it harder to fold and thus less likely to break. So long as the deck-hull seam is strong and reinforced inside and out, the wood core can absorb a lot of energy.

But then again, there are always bigger waves. The ocean is powerful
