I've given thought to using one of the newer high strength foams to do the same thing, then the foam while heavier in weight could be considerably thinner than using polystyrene so the boat could be lighter.Bill H.
There's an excellent introduction to foams, written by Ron Steinwall (Novorca Greenland paddles).
Bill knows this stuff, but for the rest of us, it's a good read, IMO.
